    Things I Love #29

    Preparing our home for fall.

Is anyone else enjoying the cooler nights? Things I love most about fall are throwing on a sweatshirt and leggings, wrapping up in a cozy blanket while reading a book and sitting by the bonfire with friends. Here are a few items that I’ve been buying to get our home ready for fall. (Click on the photos or blue words below for more information and to shop.)

Plants – I love gardening in our yard, but I’ve never been a house plant person. I had a corner in our dining room that I wanted to fill with a house plant for years and I finally took the plunge. In early August, I bought a few larger plants and some fun planters at a local garden store. (See my Instagram for photos.) I love the look of plants in the house and I think I found a new hobby. This week I bought a couple fun planter sets that I’m excited to fill.

Peach & Pebble Classic Ceramic Planter + Wood Stand – I was on the search for the perfect white planter on a wood stand and I found it. I bought both sizes of this pot and they are exactly what I wanted. Note: The pots have a drainage hole and do not come with a plug.

    Peach and Pebble

West Elm Dahlia Planter Set – I’m planning to buy this set for our Chicago showroom; but I wanted to see it before purchasing multiple sets, so I ordered one to be shipped to our home. I like it so much, I’m keeping the first set. In the showroom, I plan to display the pots and tray separately. Note: The pots have a drainage hole and come with a plug.

    West Elm Dahlia Planter Set

West Elm Calluna Planter Set – Same story as above, I’m buying this set for the Chicago showroom and wanted to check it out. However, I always had plans to keep this one for on top of our new bedroom dresser that will arrive later this month. Again, you can separate the marble tray from the brass pots. Note: These pots do not have drainage holes.

    West Elm Calluna Planter Set

Two helpful items I discovered are these planter fillers and a water / pH gauge. Also, I created a notes page on my phone for all of my new plants with information about the light and water levels they prefer; so when I’m not sure, I can reference my phone. I did second guess my water gauge once and ended up overwatering my Split Leaf Philodendron which isn’t very happy with me. I just couldn’t believe that plant could go over two weeks without any water… I guess the humidity is higher than I thought.

I love making our home cozy for Fall with candles and soft blankets.

Nest Pumpkin Chai Candle – Nothing says fall like the smell of pumpkin. If you look back through my posts, you’ll see I’m a huge Nest candle fan and their pumpkin candle has been in my seasonal rotation for years. Side note: The Nest Grapefruit candle is amazing in the kitchen during the summer.

    Nest Pumpkin Chai

Voluspa Spiced Pumpkin Latte Candle – Even though I’m not a pumpkin latte fan; I am a Voluspa candle fan and I love the look of this candle holder, so I might have to order one.

    Voluspa Spiced Pumpkin Latte

Barefoot Dreams In the Wild Throw Blanket – I bought this blanket during the Nordstrom sale for myself and a dear friend. It is so soft and cozy! John has decided it’s his new favorite blanket because it’s long enough to cover his entire body when laying on the couch. If this is more than you want to spend, there are similar styles for less here.

    Barefoot Dreams Throw Blanket

Nordstrom Ugg Plush Throw Blanket – I have this in cream and light blue. There are several other Ugg blanket styles on Amazon.

    Ugg Coastline Plush Throw Blanket

Leave a comment about what household items you buy each fall to make your home cozy and inviting.

My next post will be on cozy fall clothing. If you have any favorites, send them to me and maybe they’ll make my favorites list.

    Things I Love – #28

    The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2021

The Nordstrom Anniversary sale is this month. This sale has great designer discounts and exclusive beauty product bundles you can’t find anywhere else. So get yourself over to the Nordstrom website and start a Wish List, even if you can’t shop yet. Put everything you like into your Wish List because some things will sell out before you are able to buy.

If you don’t have a Nordstrom card, but are a regular Nordstrom shopper, I highly suggest signing up for the credit card. If you’re not familiar with Nordstrom’s rewards program, it’s composed of four different levels: Icons (shoppers who spend upward of $15,000 a year), Ambassadors (shoppers who spend at least $5,000 a year), Influencers (shoppers who spend at least $2,000 a year), and Insiders (shoppers who spend at least $499 a year.) Each tier of the program has a different start date to the Anniversary sale. Icons were able to shop on July 12, Ambassador Level access begins July 14, Influencer Level access begins July 16, and the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale opens to everyone on July 28, running through August 8.

Here are a few things on my Wish List. I won’t be buying all of these, but this is my list to pick and choose from when I’m able to purchase. (Click on the blue words below for a direct link to the item(s) on the Nordstrom website.)

I love stocking up on quality candle sets during the Nordstrom sale. Not only is it nice to have a backstock of candles, but they make great gifts. (Starting from top left: Nest Grapefruit & Tangerine candles, Archipelago 5-piece Botanical Votives, Diptyque 5-piece Limited Edition, Nest 3-candle set.) The votive sets are really nice if you haven’t tried these particular scents before. Here are all the candles and home scents included in the Anniversary sale.)

Do you know someone who loves Napa, Aspen, Malibu or Big Sur? These Archipelago candles capture the essence of each of these areas and make an amazing gift for yourself or a friend.

One last candle fave… the Voluspa tin candles are so perfect for travel because you don’t have to worry about them breaking in your suitcase. There are several scent profiles included in the sale.

The next section is Beauty Bundles – some of these bundles are created exclusively for the Nordstrom sale and can’t found anywhere else, others are just a great deal.

    La Mer Beauty Bundle

If you’ve always wanted to try LaMer or you just want these great travel sizes, this is a good deal.

    Lancome Bi-Facil Eye Makeup Remover

This is the only eye makeup remover that I use and it takes off everything (including waterproof makeup) without scrubbing the delicate eye area. This set will last me at least a year and I love getting a fresh travel size bottle to refill.

My favorite L’Occitane products are this foaming oil body wash and their hand and body lotions.

The Herbivore body line is all natural and the Coconut milk bath soak is my favorite. I’m excited to try their coconut oil body polish.

    Nécessaire Body

These were on my Nordstrom sale list last year. I LOVE the Nécessaire Eucalyptus scent body wash and usually have one bottle in my shower with a back-up in my linen cupboard. The fragrance free body lotion is really rich and if you want to add a scent, just put a few drops of scented oil in your hand with the lotion when applying.

    GloPRO Microneedling Tool Set

I have the BeautyBio GloPro Microneedling tool and use it at least a few times every month. Microneedling gently rejuvenates skin from the inside out and it really helps your beauty products absorb into the skin. (Tip: remove the batteries from your tool when not in use to extend their life dramatically.)

    Olaplex Bond Maintenance Set

This Olaplex set will help reduce breakage and strengthen your hair. Great for those of use who color and / or use heat to style. I use this trio on my hair at least once a week and have seen a big improvement with fewer split ends.

    Ok, onto some accessories…

How cute are these Carson Striped Tory Burch bags? The one on the left is more of a wallet on a chain and the one on the right is a small handbag. Both have gold chain straps.

If you need a new lug sole Chelsea ankle boot for winter, buy one during this sale. Here are two of my favorites from Marc Fisher and Tory Burch.

This Tory Burch crossbody bag makes a great date night bag. You can remove the strap, if you prefer a clutch.

This Kate Spade wallet comes in four different colors.

Gorjana Freshwater Pearl Stud Earrings. These are small and delicate. A simple, but dressy earring.

A couple cozy throw blankets. There are several blankets included in the sale if the two below aren’t your style.

This Barefoot Dreams throw is super cozy and it’s available in 12 different color combinations.

I bought this plush Ugg throw blanket in Ivory last year (for the front porch) and I think I might get it in light blue this year (for my bedroom.) There are six different colors available.

There’s always an Ugg genuine shearling slipper included in the sale. I like the thicker sole on this one, just in case you need to run outside.

If you haven’t tried Tommy John, this is a great time to do so. The fabric is super soft and the sleepwear and loungewear keeps you cool for anyone who gets warm at night.

    Tommy John Pajama Tank.

Tommy John Second Skin Lounge Pants.

    Tommy John Jersey Joggers.

Cute Thread & Supply shirt jacket (4 different colors available) for cool fall nights on the patio or by the bonfire.

Treasure & Bond V-neck Sweater available in four colors.

Large rectangle Treasure & Bond Plaid Scarf available in three color ways.

Halogen Balloon Sleeve Sweater available in four different colors.

Open Edit Rib Stitch Crop Sweater available in four colors.

I haven’t tried these Sweaty Betty Super Sculpt High Waist Leggings yet but other bloggers rave about them, so I’ll be purchasing a pair to try.

Every time I look around on the Nordstrom sale, I find more items that I like; so I might do a smaller post in a day or two of additional items. If you come across any great deals or items you love included in the sale, please share in the comments.

    Things I Love – #27

Here are a few spring purchase that I’m loving. (Click on the photos for more information or to shop.)

Old Navy t-shirt dress. I read that the maxi dress was REALLY long, so I ordered the midi dress in a tall and a regular length and I liked them so much, I kept both. I’m 5’3″ and the regular length is mid-calf and the tall length is a few inches above my ankle. If you’re tall, look for the Maxi version of this dress.

    Old Navy Vintage Stripe Dress

Banana Republic Duster Cardigan. I wore this over the Old Navy t-shirt dress (above) to the office yesterday.

    Banana Republic Duster

I also own this Camel colored long cardigan which is a little lighter than the Banana Republic Duster above. It also comes in black and heather gray.

    Amazon Long Open Cardigan

Old Navy tie die tunic sweatshirt. This comes in multiple colors. I liked the one below so much, I ordered a second color.

Old Navy Tie Die Tunic Sweatshirt

Lululemon align leggings. These are my favorite leggings and I have all of the lengths, with and without pockets, in several colors.

    Lululemon Align Leggings

    I’m always ordering hooded sweatshirts from H&M. They’re typically $19.99 or $24.99.

    H&M Hoodie
    H&M Relaxed Hoodie

Superga slides. I wore these into the ground last summer so I ordered a fresh pair this spring. You may need to size up 1/2 size so your heel is completely inside the shoe. I spray them with two coats of canvas protector and they clean up nicely with a Chlorox wipe.

    Superga COTU

Mala and Mantra Birthstone Necklace. I saw this necklace at a spa in Mexico and I loved it so much, I ordered it online before we left Mexico. I will say the photo doesn’t do the stones justice, each garnet is faceted and they shimmer in the light. There are many necklace and bracelet options on this website that would make great Mother’s Day gifts. Use code Welcome20 for a 20% discount.

San José del Cabo / Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico

This is one of my favorite warm weather destinations because it’s a quick, direct flight for us. We can leave our house in the morning and be on the beach with a margarita in hand before lunch.

This area is often referred to as Los Cabos. There are two towns in Los Cabos: San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. The area between the two towns is called The Corridor and it is lined with many resorts, houses, condos, public beaches and golf courses. (Click on any blue words below for additional information.)

Los Cabos: Cabo San Lucas, The Corridor and San José Del Cabo

How to Get There: Fly into the San José del Cabo (SJD) airport. For more tips, review my general travel post “How to Get There and Where to Stay.”

Transportation: You will need transportation to your resort since the airport is outside both cities. I suggest arranging transportation in advance with your resort as there is an abundance of time share vendors, excursion companies and taxi drivers all trying to get your attention as soon you walk out of the airport. If you are staying at an all-inclusive, I would not rent a car during your stay. Most likely your resort will have shuttles to town and, if not, they will be able to arrange a taxi. If you are staying in a vacation rental by owner (VRBO) or doing a lot of activities like golf and know you will want a car, I highly recommend setting up your car rental in advance. The car rental agencies are not known for their honesty so make sure to bring insurance information that shows you are covered in a rental car in Mexico (rental car insurance in Mexico will cost more than the rental car!) and get everything in writing. Then check your credit card to make sure they charged you the correct amount.

    Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas is centered around the large marina and has lots of restaurants, tourist shops and a high end shopping mall. The energy levels are high here and everything caters to the tourist. My least favorite part of walking around the marina is the constant barrage of people trying to sell you something, book an excursion or entice you to eat at their restaurant. Even saying “No, Gracias” seems to invite additional conversation. Now, some people like the high energy levels of Cabo and duty free shopping, but I prefer the more laid back feel of San José del Cabo.

    Cabo San Lucas

    Where to Stay in Cabo:

Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort and Spa – We’ve stayed at this beautiful resort twice. Many resorts like Grand Solmar have timeshare rooms that can be found on sites like redweek.

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal – We have not stayed here, but I follow several bloggers who have and it looks amazing. If you don’t like the location on the Pacific or don’t want to spend $1,000+ / night, make a reservation at one of their restaurants to check out this five star resort.

All Inclusive Resorts – We don’t typically stay at all inclusive resorts, but there are MANY in Los Cabos. Check this site for the best rated all inclusive resorts.

    Restaurants in Cabo:

The Office on Medano Beach is a very well known beach bar / restaurant.

There are many good fresh seafood restaurants around the marina. We had a nice lunch at Fisherman’s Landing.

Remember what I’ve said in previous travel posts about making lunch or dinner reservations at resorts in order to get into the resort and look around. Los Cabos is the ideal place to follow this advice as most of the resorts, communities and golf courses are gated; but with a dinner reservation you can get in just about anywhere. However, don’t think you can just drive up and fake a dinner reservation – the guard desks usually check the reservation list before allowing you through the gate.

    Things to Do in Cabo:

There is a lot of shopping in Cabo, but stick to the Marina / tourist areas. Cabo is generally safe but like any town with a high rate of tourist traffic, pick pocketing is a concern; so keep your money and credit cards secure and close. We usually leave our passports, some cash and at least one credit card in our room just to be safe. And, of course, keep an eye on your drinks, stay in groups, etc. On one trip, we wandered out of the tourist area looking for a coffee shop / bakery I had read about online; when we finally admitted we were lost, we stopped at a Motel to ask them to call us a taxi and we were told it wasn’t safe for us to be in this neighborhood and to wait inside the lobby until the taxi arrived.

Note regarding conversion rates: Check with your credit card company in advance about what Peso conversion rate they use. When charging to your credit card, inquire what the conversion rate is at the resort, store or restaurant; in most cases, it’s to your benefit to charge your purchase to your credit card in Pesos. Also, contact your bank in the US and order a few hundred dollars in Pesos for those restaurants and shops who don’t take credit cards. Then, try to use up your Pesos before leaving Mexico.

    The Corridor

    Hotels in The Corridor:

Montage Los Cabos – We stayed here for three nights and it was magical. It’s expensive, but if you want to be pampered, this is a great place to stay. The spa is amazing. I had a pedicure and manicure in the salon one day and the California Wildflower treatment with Ruth the following day. The spa is adults only and the amenities are first rate (and I’ve been to a lot of spas.) We were fortunate enough to have the entire spa pool to ourselves for the afternoon. If you like to golf, make sure to have the concierge book a tee time at the private Twin Dolphin Club (a Fred Couple’s course) and stay for lunch. (The photo collages below are best viewed on a Desktop.)

Viceroy Los Cabos – This is another resort that I haven’t stayed at, but I’ve seen numerous reviews and photos online. I read the sunsets from the Cielomar Rooftop restaurant are amazing.

One & Only Palmilla – This is a beautiful, luxury resort that caters to both adults and families with several pools (including an adults only pool), restaurants, a spa, kid’s club and numerous activities.

    Restaurants in The Corridor:

Mezcal at The Montage was fabulous. The food was not only presented beautifully, but it tasted great; and the service and decor were wonderful. We had a dinner and a breakfast at Mezcal and it’s definitely worth a visit even if you don’t stay here. There’s another restaurant and bar at The Montage called Marea that overlooks the water, but I didn’t enjoy their food as much. However, if you make a reservation for dinner at Mezcal, arrive early and go to Marea for a cocktail. We did a tequila tasting at Marea one afternoon that was very fun and educational.

Agua at the One and Only Palmilla offers a romantic moonlight table with a tasting menu for two and gorgeous water views. This is a wonderful setting if you’re celebrating something special. The food was phenomenal (even though it’s a preset menu, they will accommodate dietary restrictions) and the restaurant had great live music. If you’re traveling with children, book a terrace table at Agua.

    San José Del Cabo

The beach areas in San José are now lined with large resorts and tourist shops; but if you go into the old town square (aka Centro), you will find historic buildings, great authentic Mexican restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries. The shop owners in San José are friendly, often offering greetings from the sidewalk; but no one followed us down the street trying to sell us beach hats, jewelry or cigars like they do around the Cabo marina.

    San José del Cabo Mission

Where to Stay near San José:

We love renting a condo at El Encanto Villas. They have everything from two bedroom condos to six bedroom houses with private pools available for rent. All of these properties are privately owned but there is an onsite management group who rents the properties on their behalf. There is a concierge at the office who can assist you with any problems or questions about the property as well as making restaurant reservations and booking activities. These properties are inside a gated community outside of San Jose, so you’ll need to rent a car. Technically, all of the beaches in Los Cabos are public, but this one is very quiet. Guests at El Encanto have access to the massive infinity pools on the property, plus the private Vero Neo Beach Club for an additional fee. Note: You can make a reservation to eat at the Beach Club restaurant / bar without paying the daily fee.

Acre Baja is a fun resort with twelve treehouse rooms. (See photos below under Restaurants.) Note it is not located on a beach, but in the middle of a lush, naturally occurring grove of Palm and Mango trees.

Restaurants in or near San José:

Flora’s Field Kitchen at Flora Farms is always a favorite stop for us and we typically visit numerous times. It’s located outside of town and the last mile or so is on a rutted dirt road, but stick it out… it’s worth it. The majority of the produce is grown by Flora Farms and everything else is sourced locally. The cocktails are made with freshly squeezed juices and herbs – who would have thought to put carrot juice in a margarita? It’s called the Farmarita – try it! When booking your reservation online (and trust me, you need a reservation in advance) consider booking a farm tour before your meal. The grounds are beautiful, but there are areas off limit to the public without an escort. Don’t miss the mini-farmer’s market at the back of Flora’s Field Kitchen. They have everything from fresh bread and honey to produce and pre-made sandwiches. Flora Farms also has fractional ownership cottages and haylofts on-site and tours are available for potential owners. On a personal note, if you go soon (during Covid) I would recommend a late lunch over dinner. The restaurant is very popular and when we went for dinner on our last night, I was a little uncomfortable at the large number of people mingling on the grounds while waiting for their table.

Acre at the Acre Baja Resort is past Flora Farms – just follow the signage down the bumpy dirt road. The grounds are super lush and it has a very different feel from Flora Farms; so if you have time, visit both. Acre Baja has an animal sanctuary that you are allowed to visit. Be careful though, the puppies are adorable and up for adoption.

Los Tamarindos is another property located down the bumpy road past Flora Farms that has a farm-to-table restaurant.

Jazmin’s is located in the historic center of San José del Cabo and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

La Lupita Taco and Mezcal is a great taco restaurant in the center of San José del Cabo. This is a perfect place to eat before the Thursday night art walk.

Buzzards Bar and Grill is a small restaurant on the sand near El Encanto de La Laguna. If you rent a condo or house at El Encanto, definitely check it out for their large platters of chips with guacamole and salsa, quesadillas, fajitas, tacos and margaritas. Please note they only take cash (bring Pesos if you have them) and the kitchen closes at 7:30 PM.

Things to Do in Los Cabos:

Golf: There are many golf courses to choose from in the area. The easiest way to make reservations is to work with the concierge at your hotel or a golf service like Best 4 Mexico Tee Times. They may be able to get you on private courses that you can’t typically play without being a member.

Boat Day Trips: Sailing, snorkeling, whale watching, deep sea fishing… choose your adventure, but I recommend getting out on the water at least once. We did a sailing / snorkeling / sunset day with Day Sail Cabo and Captain Bob several years ago and we had a blast. Just find a boat that fits your needs and I suggest booking in advance. Note: Most beaches are not safe for swimming in Los Cabos, due to strong currents and riptides in the area. So it’s usually best to swim or snorkel from a boat, out past the currents.

Thursday night Art Walk in San José del Cabo: If you have a car or are staying in San José, don’t miss the Thursday night art walk. There are food vendors, but if you want to eat in a restaurant that night, I strongly suggest making your dinner reservation in advance as the art walk is well attended and restaurants book up.

Flora Farms and Los Tamarindos both offer cooking classes. Look at their websites to find one that matches your area of interest. We took the Flora Farms salsa cooking class which is located in a private part of the grounds and includes one margarita and a huge fish taco lunch. (Don’t plan dinner for that night because you can take home all of your left overs.)

Cabo Adventures offers many activities including: snorkeling and diving, ATV tours, sailing, zip lining, etc.

Todo Santos is located about 45 miles North of Cabo and used to be a quiet haven for surfers and artists. New restaurants, hotels and shops are quickly transforming the artsy town into more of a tourist town, but it’s still worth a visit.

    What to Pack:

Sunscreen, hats, water shirts (for snorkeling or diving) and sunglasses. (See “What’s In My Beach Bag.”) The sun is hot here and you will sunburn quickly.

If you are staying somewhere with a water view, bring a pair of binoculars. In March we saw whales from our balcony daily.

Restaurants are fairly casual. A sundress or shorts and a nice shirt will work for dinner at most places. Remember to bring a sweater or wrap if you’ll be out after sunset, it cools off fast at night. In March, I wish I had packed a light sweatshirt for some of the cooler mornings.

    Covid Testing:

A negative Covid test is currently required to enter the United States from Mexico. Click here for current Los Cabos Covid-19 information.

If you are staying at a large resort, they will most likely offer Covid testing onsite. You MUST have your passport with you for the Covid test. If you’re renting a condo, use this link for a list of testing facilities. John and I had appointments at the Hospiten in San Jose del Cabo. The cost was $35 and we had our results the same day. Allow extra time at the airport for all of the additional Covid paperwork. We uploaded all of our documents in advance, but the airline still wanted to see the reports again to ensure our passport numbers matched; and there was one additional document we had to complete once we were at the airport.

I couldn’t include everything in this blog post; so if you have any specific questions, please reach out. (Check my Instagram for more photos.) Also, if you have any favorite hotels, restaurants or things to do in this area that I didn’t include; please comment below so everyone can benefit from the additional information. We’re so excited to slowly and safely start traveling again!

    Things I Love – #26

    What’s In My Beach Bag

Beach Bag: Find a collapsible straw bag that can lay flat in the bottom of your suitcase, or use it as your carry-on bag. (Click on the blue words for more information or to purchase.)

    Straw Beach Bag

Sun hat: You definitely want an inexpensive straw sun hat that can fold up in your suitcase and get wet in the pool.

    Straw Sun Hat

Sunscreen: Sun Bum 30 for body, Sun Bum Lip Balm and Elta MD for face. If you are spending time in the ocean, Sun Bum is also reef friendly.

Waterproof Bag: I always have at least one waterproof bag inside my beach bag for things I want to keep dry, like my phone and Kindle. (Note: I own several of these and use them for my bathroom products inside my suitcase, instead of disposable baggies.)

    Waterproof Zippered Bag

Kindle or magazines: I don’t like to take a real book to the beach because I don’t like to get the pages wet or sandy. I also like that I can adjust the amount of background light on the Kindle, which makes it easier to read in the sun.

Wide Tooth comb and a deep conditioner: While I’m sitting by the pool I figure I might as well deep condition my hair, I just put a handful on my hair and comb it back under my hat. The wide tooth comb is also helpful for untangling hair without damaging it when you come out of the water. (Note: If you have any sample packets of conditioner, use those.)

Snacks: I usually have a bag or two of nuts in my beach bag.

Yeti: Sometimes it’s filled with ice water and sometimes it’s filled with a cocktail. I like the closeable lids to keep the sand and bugs out. If you have an older Yeti without the MagSlider lid, you can buy the lids separately.

Sunglasses: My favorites right now are the polarized Wedge ($69) and the Rebel ($59) from eyebobs.

Havaianas flip flops: I love these for the pool and beach. I don’t want to ruin my nice leather sandals with sand or water and these are so easy and light to pack.

Spring is Around the Corner – Time for a Refresh

We’re having a little sunny snap in Minnesota and everyone is ditching their coats because it’s a balmy 37 degrees. Everything is relative, right? Trust me, after a week of subzero temps, it’s like a breath of fresh air to see the sunshine, the snow melt and the animals playing in the yard.

I thought it would be fun to share some of my Spring Refresh ideas to help everyone get through the last bit of winter and welcome spring.

Redecorate a sunny room. I put away my red and plaid winter pillows and blankets and pulled lighter colored pillows and blankets from around the house for our South facing front porch. Now when we get a sunny afternoon I have a cozy spot to drink a cup of tea and read a book.

Buy fresh flowers. You don’t need to spend a lot on flowers – I love posting my grocery store flower arrangements on Instagram. It’s also a great time of year to force paper white bulbs, buy a flowering plant like Jasmin or pick up a bunch of forsythia branches that will bloom with beautiful yellow flowers. Don’t forget a small vase of flowers on your nightstand. Every time I do this it makes me smile… so, why don’t I do it more often?

Find a new book set in a fun location for a little virtual travel. I love reading fictional books set in a location I would like to visit. I recently read many books by T.A. Williams set in Italy or France. (Guess where I want to travel now?) Lucy Coleman has light fictional books set in great locations as well. Check my previous blog post for more Book (and Cocktail) Recommendations.

Plan your summer garden – flowers and / or vegetable. This is a great time to look at Pinterest or online for new garden ideas. Even if you just plant flowers in a pot, it’s always fun to plan for a new color scheme or to try plants or planter groupings you haven’t used in the past. Just do a little pre-planning to make sure they’ll get the right amount of sun, shade, water, drainage, etc.

What are you doing to celebrate spring?

    Things I Love – #25

I’m doing a quick favorite things post today because I received a few new items in the mail that I want to share before they are sold out. (Click on photos or blue words below for more details or to order.)

This ASOS Design longline trench coat in stone is very high quality and it’s only $79. It’s fully lined, with pockets and nice buttons. This feels like a much more expensive trench coat. It does run large though so size down. I just ordered one size smaller and hopefully that’s small enough.

    ASOS Trench

This ASOS Design ribbed oversized t-shirt dress in stone is really soft, cute and only $36.00. I love the neckline. This color can sometimes wash me out, but this particular shade is great with my skin tone. It does run large so size down one size; or two, if you prefer a less oversized look.

I love Havaianas flip flops for the beach and pool. We are going to Mexico in late March so I’m stocking up on a few beach basics. Yes, I bought all three pairs, but they will last me through the summer.

    Havaianas slim tropical
    Havaianas slim metallic

This Free People Maiya Sweater Set is slouchy and comfy. I bought it in oatmeal and I’m thinking about buying it in black. This set runs large so size down one size.

This Banana Republic ribbed maxi sweater dress is selling out, but I now own it in black and camel. I’m wearing theses dresses with a Moto boot and cardigan now, but I’ll definitely be wearing them in the spring with a pair of sneakers or sandals.

I wore this Banana Republic open cardigan in navy over the camel maxi dress above.

This market tote from Society Social just makes me smile.

Please reach out if items are sold out in your size and I’ll try to find something similar. Happy shopping!

Someday We Will Travel Again… Where Do You Want To Go?

When you start thinking / dreaming about vacation travel, read through my blog posts for tips and look through some of my favorite places for suggestions of places to stay, things to do, restaurants to try, etc. (The blue words and photos below will take you to my previous blog posts with more information.)

Choosing a Travel Destination: Read this post to help you determine where you want to go. Obviously post Covid, other considerations are:

    • Am I comfortable flying or do I need to pick a place where I can drive?
    • What are the Covid rates where I would like to visit?
    • Is the place I want to go allowing visitors and, if so, are there any requirements before or after I travel like Covid testing and / or quarantine? State and local health department websites are your best resource. Keep in mind that restrictions can change rapidly depending on local conditions. Check back for updates as your trip gets closer.

How To Get There and Where To Stay: This post will help you decide what kind of accomodations will best suit you. Post Covid, additional considerations are:

    • Are the restaurants open where I’m traveling? Do I want to go out to eat in a restaurant or get take-out every night? If not, you’ll need a suite, condo or house with a kitchen.
    • Am I comfortable being with groups of other people at the pool or in the lounge areas of a hotel? If not, consider a house with a private pool.

If you choose to rent a house or condo read my post How to Choose a Vacation Rental and Make it Feel Like Home or at least feel like your own space while you’re there. These tips are especially helpful if you’re staying in the same place for several weeks.

Another good reminder is to make sure your travel is fully refundable if there is a surge in Covid rates or if someone in your group becomes ill. I heard a rumor that airfare will no longer be automatically refundable / changeable after March 2021.

Below are some domestic travel destinations to consider. I’ve been to all of these places, but I didn’t write a blog post for all of them. Feel free to contact me for more information on any of these destinations by commenting below or direct messaging me.

    Napa Valley
We love combining Pebble Beach and Carmel Valley.
    Palm Springs & Palm Desert
    Charleston
Places I’ve stayed in Arizona include Scottsdale and Sedona.
Places I’ve stayed in Florida include: Rosemary Beach, Naples and Anna Maria Island.
Chicago – I can’t believe I haven’t written a post about Chicago! I will write a travel guide once everything opens back up and I know what places survived the pandemic.

When you are willing to fly, here are a few other places to consider.

    Maui
    Turks & Caicos
We went to Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Stockholm in one trip.
Places I’ve stayed in Canada include: Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City.
Places I’ve stayed in Scotland include: Inverness, St. Andrews and Edinburgh.
Spain – I visited a friend in Barcelona and Mallorca de Palma.
Places I’ve stayed in Italy include Milan, Santa Margherita, Florence, Rome, Cortona, Maranello and Venice.
One of my favorite beach destinations is San Jose del Cabo in Baja California. It’s a quick, direct flight for us and there are great golf courses for John.

I’m dreaming of an extended stay in Italy. We’ll see when Covid allows this, but creating a Italy Trip Board on VRBO and saving Italian Villas in Umbria helps get me through the cold, frozen winter in Saint Paul and Chicago.

I’ve also read a lot of fictional books this last year that were set in the coastal towns of France, so that’s an area of interest as well.

Once you are comfortable traveling, where is your dream vacation destination?

    Valentine’s Day Cocktails

For Valentine’s Day, I’m thinking either champagne or red cocktails… or red champagne cocktails. 🙂 Here’s a round-up of some of my favorites. (Click on the blue words below for more information or to purchase.)

    Sorbet Champagne Float

    Sorbet Champagne Float

    Raspberry Sorbet

    Raspberries

    Champagne

Place a ball of sorbet in a chilled coupe, top with champagne and berries. Serve with a spoon. You could even serve this for dessert, just use a chilled dessert dish and increase the size of the sorbet scoop.

    Cherry Champagne Cocktail

    Cherry Champagne Cocktail

Luxardo cherries (do not refrigerate or the syrup will crystalize – speaking from experience)

1 oz Cherry liqueur (I used Heering

    Fresh lemon juice

    5 oz Champagne or Prosecco

Drop a Luxardo cherry in the bottom of a chilled champagne coupe or flute. Use a spoon to drizzle a tablespoon of Luxardo syrup in the glass. Top with 1 oz cherry liqueur and a few drops of fresh squeezed lemon juice (this will enhance the cherry), then top with Champagne or Prosecco. Garnish with a lemon peel.

Below are two Hibiscus Cocktails. Make the hibiscus concentrate in advance so it has time to chill.

Hibiscus concentrate. If you can find hibiscus flowers that’s great, (available on Amazon) but if not, just pick up a container of natural hibiscus tea at the grocery store. The Republic of Tea is a good brand.

Boil 1 1/2 cups of water, remove from heat

Add 1/4 cup of hibiscus flowers or several tea bags

Let steep for at least 10 minutes until the concentrate is a dark red.

Strain out the flowers and discard. Refrigerate the concentrated tea in a sealed container for up to one week. (I like to store my concentrate in Mason jars.)

    Hibiscus Gin Spritz

    Hibiscus Gin Spritz

1 oz Aviation gin or your favorite brand

    1 oz Hibiscus Concentrate

    4 oz LaMarca Prosecco

    2 oz Q club soda

Add all ingredients to a large wine goblet filled with ice. Stir gently. If you’d like, garnish with a lime wheel.

    Hibiscus Margarita

To make your Hibiscus Margarita extra special, make a hibiscus rimmer for your glass. Grind equal parts sugar and dried hibiscus flowers together with a mortar and pestle until you have a fine pink powder. (The sugar helps break down the hibiscus petals.) Then add salt to taste.

Pour a little Cointreau in a plate to wet the rim of your glass and then dip the glass in your hibiscus rimmer. Fill your glass with ice and set aside.

Hibiscus Margarita, combine in a cocktail shaker filled with ice:

1 1/2 oz Patron Silver tequila, or your favorite brand of tequila

    1 oz Cointreau

2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice

    1 oz hibiscus concentrate

Shake well and strain into your glass with the hibiscus rimmer and ice.

For a non-alcoholic hibiscus cocktail, I love the hibiscus concentrate with lemonade and a splash of club soda.

    Cheers!

What are you drinking on Valentine’s Day?
