Winter Skin Care Routine
I’ve been asked by several people about my winter skin care routine, so I’m finally writing a blog post detailing what I do routinely. (Click the blue words below for more product information.)
I’m going to start backwards and say the most important thing you can do for your skin is to remove your make-up at night. So, if you aren’t washing your face every night, start there. Next, incorporate a good night time moisturizer, a daily sunscreen and a regular scrub. Now, for the beauty junkies who already have a basic skin care routine in place – let’s get into the fun stuff. Note: I regularly try new products. I think it’s good for your skin to mix it up once in while. So, the products I’m using right now certainly aren’t the holy grail of face products; use what works best for your skin and fits into your budget. For example, you don’t need to use Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream at night – any quality moisturizer can work. Just find the right one for your skin type and if you aren’t sure talk with someone at Sephora, Ulta or any beauty counter and ask for samples or buy travel size sets before committing to full size containers.
Now, for my routine:
Exfoliate: In the morning before I get in the shower, I fill my Vanity Planet face steamer with distilled water. On the days that I wash my hair (every other day), I use Goop Glow Microderm face exfoliator in the shower.
Prep your Face: After my shower while my body lotion is soaking in, I turn on my face steamer and put on Goop Glow Vitamin C eye cream and a few drops of Drunk Elephant face oil. I’ll steam my face for a few minutes and then I use my Gua Sha stone to massage my face and to drain my sinuses and lymph nodes. If you’re new to using a gua sha, I suggest you just google “how to use a facial gua sha stone” for many different YouTube videos. (Side Note: I bought a gua sha for my Mom and at her next facial, her esthetician asked her what she was doing differently. Face massage makes a difference!) If I’m in a hurry, I’ll brush my teeth, put in hair products, etc. while I continue steaming my face and neck. However, if you have the time, lean into the face steamer and take good deep breaths to relax before you start the day. When you’re done steaming, unplug the steamer and empty the water reservoir so it dries out between uses to prevent any mildew from forming. Let your face dry naturally – do not wipe off the steam.
Moisturize and Protect: Once my face is dry, I mix a half dropper of Ilia tinted serum with SPF 40 and a very small amount of Saie Sunglow luminizer in my palm and apply that to my entire face including under my eyes. (Note: If my skin is feeling really dry, I’ll add a small amount of my night time lotion into the Ilia and Saie before I mix it up in my palm.) Once that sinks it, you’re ready for make-up.
Clean your Face: In the evening, I remove my eye make-up with Lancome eye make-up remover and then rub Clinique take the day off cleansing balm all over my face an eyes. I lay a hot, wet washcloth on my face for a few seconds to heat up the cleanser and open my pours. I wipe off my make-up, rinse the wash cloth and put the hot wet wash cloth back on my face for a few seconds and wipe a second time to remove any residual cleanser. (Tip: I buy packs of inexpensive wash cloths and use a clean one each night. I prefer gray or black so I don’t have to worry about leaving make-up stains.)
Treat and Moisturize: After cleansing, I apply a toner or serum followed by eye cream, face cream and my favorite Laneige night time lip balm. I’m currently on an Augustinus Bader skin care kick, but again you don’t need to use this brand. There are many high quality brands that will moisturize your face for less.
I recently started using the Higher Dose red light therapy on my face a couple times each week and I really think it’s making a difference. So, if you’re already doing everything else above, this is a fun item to add to your routine.
If you have a lot of sun damage or dry patches, consider incorporating additional items into your skincare routine like a Vitamin C+E serum (put this on in the morning before your sunscreen / serums) and overnight exfoliators like the Goop Glow Dark Spot Exfoliating Sleep Milk or a chemical peel like GoopGlow Glycolic Acid Overnight Peel. If you’ve never used a chemical peel, beware – it will tingle. I find it’s best to fan your face until it has finished drying. Only use the peel once or twice a week until your skin has built up a tolerance. (Don’t forget to use all of these products on your neck and chest!)
I know some of these products are expensive, but I haven’t had a professional facial in years and I think my skin looks better now then it did when I had facials every other month. So, if you do get professional facials, think about investing that money in equipment for regular at home use. A consistent routine is what will produce long-term results, don’t expect to see dramatic changes in a day or two. Please leave a comment below about your favorite winter skin care products. I’m always interested in trying new things.

Things I Love #33 – Amazon Prime Sale
Today starts the Amazon Prime Early Access Sale so I want to share items I’ve bought recently. Click on the blue words or photos below for more information or links to purchase.
The Drop Women’s Noa Trench. This trench is available in four colors. I already have a light tan trench coat so I went with black for this one.
The Drop Claudia Cuddle Hoodie Midi Dress. This dress is available in 7 different colors. I bought the charcoal and I’m excited to wear it with sneakers or booties.
The Drop Iona Long Sleeve Hooded Mini Sweatshirt Dress. This dress was recommended to me by my niece. It’s available in twelve different colors and it’s a nice lightweight sweatshirt material for fall.
The Anrabess 1/4 Zip Slouchy Sweater. I love a good oversized sweater with a tank top and leggings in the winter. I have not received this sweater yet, but it has great reviews. (This brand has several FreePeople lookalike tops and sweaters.)
Oversized Sweater with contrast trim. Another great sweater for layering or to do a partial tuck. Available in many colors and pattern variations.
The Drop Renata Rib Midi Dress. This sweater dress is available in black, mocha and white. The quality of this dress is really good and it is not itchy like some of the other sweater dresses I’ve ordered from Amazon.
Bala Bangle Weights. These are available in both 1 pound and 2 pound options. I’ve had my eye on these weights for a while and now that they’re on sale, I think it’s time to purchase.
The ice roller for face & eye puffiness, migraine pain relief and minor injury. I posted this in Things I Love #20. Store this roller in the freezer and if you’ve had a short night or are just feeling a little puffy, roll over your face to depuff and invigorate your skin. I’ve also used it for migraine relief.
Since Covid, I’m a huge fan of disposable hand towels in our guest bathroom.
This rattan holder fits the disposable towels above perfectly. (I bought an acrylic tray that was too small, so if buying a different holder, make sure to check the dimensions.)
Another option to disposable guest hand towels is to buy a bulk pack of wash cloths. Don’t forget to have another basket for guests to place the wash cloth after they’ve dried their hands.

Things I Love #31 – Fall Edition
Below are some of my favorite fall purchases. Click on the photos or blue words below for more details and shopping links.
I am a huge fan of Sweetwater Decor and I’m thrilled their line is now available on Amazon. I have their relaxation room scent and candle in my bedroom, I have the spa day scent in my bathroom and front porch. I recently purchased Pumpkin Spice, Hello Pumpkin and Sweater Weather which are scattered throughout my house. The candles are a soy wax blend that is hand poured in Pittsburg, PA. Most candles are available in glass (clear or amber) or stoneware jars (cream or black.) I have a stash of Sweetwater Decor candles in my cupboard for emergency gifts – because everyone loves a great candle!
And, how cute is this sweater weather mug?! It’s available in 3 different styles, but I love using this campfire coffee style.
Since the days are getting shorter, I love looking outside and seeing these outdoor lights on my arbor and fence. They really brighten up the backyard. Don’t forget to order a box of replacement bulbs.
This animated pumpkin is a riot. If you have kids or like to have something fun to set out for your trick-or-treaters, pick up one of these before they sell out.
These stretchy gloves are great for walking the dog or running errands during chilly fall mornings. I have pairs stashed in my car, my purse and several coat pockets.
Don’t forget to stock up on popcorn bowls, seasonings and cozy blankets for fall movie nights.

Things I Love #29
Preparing our home for fall.
Is anyone else enjoying the cooler nights? Things I love most about fall are throwing on a sweatshirt and leggings, wrapping up in a cozy blanket while reading a book and sitting by the bonfire with friends. Here are a few items that I’ve been buying to get our home ready for fall. (Click on the photos or blue words below for more information and to shop.)
Plants – I love gardening in our yard, but I’ve never been a house plant person. I had a corner in our dining room that I wanted to fill with a house plant for years and I finally took the plunge. In early August, I bought a few larger plants and some fun planters at a local garden store. (See my Instagram for photos.) I love the look of plants in the house and I think I found a new hobby. This week I bought a couple fun planter sets that I’m excited to fill.
Peach & Pebble Classic Ceramic Planter + Wood Stand – I was on the search for the perfect white planter on a wood stand and I found it. I bought both sizes of this pot and they are exactly what I wanted. Note: The pots have a drainage hole and do not come with a plug.
West Elm Dahlia Planter Set – I’m planning to buy this set for our Chicago showroom; but I wanted to see it before purchasing multiple sets, so I ordered one to be shipped to our home. I like it so much, I’m keeping the first set. In the showroom, I plan to display the pots and tray separately. Note: The pots have a drainage hole and come with a plug.
West Elm Calluna Planter Set – Same story as above, I’m buying this set for the Chicago showroom and wanted to check it out. However, I always had plans to keep this one for on top of our new bedroom dresser that will arrive later this month. Again, you can separate the marble tray from the brass pots. Note: These pots do not have drainage holes.
Two helpful items I discovered are these planter fillers and a water / pH gauge. Also, I created a notes page on my phone for all of my new plants with information about the light and water levels they prefer; so when I’m not sure, I can reference my phone. I did second guess my water gauge once and ended up overwatering my Split Leaf Philodendron which isn’t very happy with me. I just couldn’t believe that plant could go over two weeks without any water… I guess the humidity is higher than I thought.
I love making our home cozy for Fall with candles and soft blankets.
Nest Pumpkin Chai Candle – Nothing says fall like the smell of pumpkin. If you look back through my posts, you’ll see I’m a huge Nest candle fan and their pumpkin candle has been in my seasonal rotation for years. Side note: The Nest Grapefruit candle is amazing in the kitchen during the summer.
Voluspa Spiced Pumpkin Latte Candle – Even though I’m not a pumpkin latte fan; I am a Voluspa candle fan and I love the look of this candle holder, so I might have to order one.
Barefoot Dreams In the Wild Throw Blanket – I bought this blanket during the Nordstrom sale for myself and a dear friend. It is so soft and cozy! John has decided it’s his new favorite blanket because it’s long enough to cover his entire body when laying on the couch. If this is more than you want to spend, there are similar styles for less here.
Nordstrom Ugg Plush Throw Blanket – I have this in cream and light blue. There are several other Ugg blanket styles on Amazon.
Leave a comment about what household items you buy each fall to make your home cozy and inviting.
My next post will be on cozy fall clothing. If you have any favorites, send them to me and maybe they’ll make my favorites list.

Things I Love – #24
Below are some great gift ideas for Valentine’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, hostess gifts, etc. (Click photos or the blue text for links.)
Notes to Self socks. I love these inspirational socks. Great for Moms, daughters, sisters, best friends, husbands, yourself… you get the idea.
This is a fun couple’s quiz book. My husband and I just take the quizzes verbally and try to guess each other’s answers. Remember, The Newlywed Game? It’s kind of like that, but with multiple choice and not on live TV.
I love this leather catch-all that says You + Me. It’s cute on a night stand for jewelry, lip balm, change, keys, etc.
Silk pillowcases are supposed to help with break-outs, wrinkles and even bedhead. Make sure you get 100% silk and wash it inside a delicates laundry bag, then hang to dry.
This cocktail making set is great for someone who likes to make Manhattans, Old Fashioneds or other cocktails that require stirring instead of shaking. This set comes with everything you need.
An assortment of bitters also makes a great gift for the bourbon and whiskey connoisseur.
This Pure Fiji coconut sugar scrub was at the Fiji resort we went to for my 50th birthday. Luckily, I don’t have to travel to Fiji every time I need to restock. This scrub is great for dry winter skin and it smells like the beach.
Everyone with an Apple Watch could use a new band once in a while. I love these sport loop bands in fun colors.
A flowering bulb garden is great to help friends (or yourself) get through the gloomy winter months.
Don’t forget the pets. Amazon has so many great dog toys. Our son’s golden, Bo, is a chewer and goes through toys at an alarming rate – even the “aggressive chewer” toys – so we have new dog toys arriving regularly. (Our daughter’s dog, Frito, gets regular Amazon toy shipments from me as well.)

Things I Love – #20
Holiday Gift Ideas
As I’ve gotten older, I like to focus on gifts that involve an experience. Since travel and public experiences (like a spa day) are limited now, below are some ideas for stay-at-home experiences. (Click on blue text {NOT photos} for more details or to purchase.)
Hand / Foot Treatments: Between the constant hand washing and the cold temps, everyone could use extra hand cream. Buy a package of white cotton gloves and a few tubes of thick hand lotion. (The cotton gloves will warm up hands to help the lotion soak in – also there won’t be greasy hand prints on everything.) Fill several small gift bags with a pair of gloves and one tube of lotion, now you have little gifts for all your girlfriends. To elevate: Include a foot mask with a thick pair of socks and a lip balm.
Manicure / Pedicure: I love these cute polish and top coat ornaments from Olive and June. To elevate: Fill a plastic storage container with a polish remover dispenser, cotton rounds, a fingernail file, buffer and orange sticks.
Spa Time: Include a favorite face sheet mask, bath salts and body lotion. To elevate: Include a facial steamer, a cooling roller and under eye masks. I love this face steamer and cooling roller (store the roller in the freezer and roll over your face and eyes to reduce puffiness and brighten your skin.)
Build Your Own Pizza Night: A pizza stone, a pizza cutter and a pizza peel. To elevate: Include Italian beer or wine and a gift certificate to a local Italian market for gourmet supplies.
Charcuterie Board: Order a custom cutting board and combine it with small serving bowls and a set of cheese knives. To elevate: Add a bottle of wine and assorted shelf-stable charcuterie items like: fig jam, Marcona almonds, olives, cornichons and gourmet crackers or include a gift certificate to a local cheese shop.
Cookie making: A new mixing bowl, cookie sheets, spatulas and cookie cutters for an afternoon of baking. To elevate: Include a Kitchenaid mixer an apron, pot holders and / or a family favorite cookie recipe.
Hallmark Christmas Movie Night: A mug or two, hot chocolate, marshmallows, crushed candy canes and a set of Christmas movie bingo cards. To elevate: Buy glass canisters for the hot chocolate fixings and a handheld frother to create a fluffy hot cocoa. This frother almost doubles the size of your drink, so leave lots of room in your mug!
Book Basket: Fill a basket with your favorite books or an assortment of best sellers. To elevate: Include a monogram book embosser and embossing stickers or a Kindle with a Kindle Unlimited membership. Consider sending the same book to multiple friends and setting up a virtual book club date in January.
Bulb Garden: You can purchase a bulb garden or kit online or from your local garden store. To elevate: Make your own kit with a pot that matches the recipient’s style, a gallon baggie of potting soil or stones, a paper bag with paper white bulbs and don’t forget to include potting instructions. Once planted, the bulbs will bloom in about four weeks. Everyone could use flowers during the January gloom.
Movie Night: Put together a basket with classic Christmas DVDs and treats including popcorn, flavored popcorn seasoning, traditional movie theater candy and bottled sodas. To elevate: Include popcorn bowls and a cozy blanket or a subscription to Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime video.
Game Night: Choose a favorite board game like Life, Monopoly, Trouble or Scrabble, add a deck of playing cards, Uno or Skippo, then add some sweet and salty snacks. To elevate: Send snack boxes and a game like Yahtzee to multiple households and schedule a Zoom call for a virtual game night.
What are some of your favorite stay-at-home experiences? I’m always looking for more ideas.

Things I Love – #16
Here’s another Amazon list, but this one is focused on household items. Since I am still limiting the number of stores I go to, we have weekly Amazon deliveries. Click on the photos below or the blue text for an Amazon link to the products listed.
If you want to chill down a bottle of wine quickly or just keep your open bottle of patio wine nice and cold, order this La Creuset wine cooler sleeve. When it’s empty, it folds flat so it doesn’t take up much room in your freezer.
You know I love Nest candles since they’ve been on my blog several times in Things I Love – #8 , Things I Love – #2 and the Nordstrom Sale. These two candles smell so fresh and they are in beautiful containers that can be repurposed after the candle is gone. I bought these for birthday gifts but I like them so much I might need to order more for myself. The Ocean Mist candle is more expensive, but note it is a larger 3-wick candle.
These Lucia candles were on my Things I Love – #1 post. I first discovered Lucia candles at a vineyard in Napa. I didn’t want to pack a glass candle holder in my suitcase so I found them online and ordered them before we even left Napa. Amazon offers different scents at different times; so if these scents don’t appeal to you, check back in a few weeks to see if there is a new scent in stock. The scents are very mild, so they’re best used in a smaller room like a bathroom or bedroom.
EltaMD Face Sunscreen was in Things I Love – #4. The EltaMD sunscreen line is recommended by dermatologists because it doesn’t leave an oily residue behind which might cause breakouts or reactions with sensitive skin. There are multiple variations of this sunscreen, so look around for the correct one to fit your skin needs. I personally prefer the clear sunscreen over the tinted.
Early in the quarantine process, I sent my daughter a Yahtzee game. Then we had a Zoom call where we played Yahtzee as a family. The game I bought her had a plastic cup and was really loud when shaking the dice, so I bought her the leather felt-lined Yahtzee cup. I also discovered I was running low on score sheets, but guess where I found them… on Amazon, of course!
Are you getting tired of all of your games? We love Play Nine. Even though it’s called a golf game, it really has nothing to do with golf except using golf terminology on the cards like Hole-In-One, Out-of-Bounds, Par, etc. It’s a fun game for 2 – 6 players and you can easily visit and play. My Mom has a regular Play Nine ladies group and they set up two tables with a set of cards for each table.
We don’t have central air in our house, so in the summer we always have a fan in our kitchen. Our old fan stopped working, so I ordered this streamlined Homech tower fan and we love it. It doesn’t take up much space but it really moves the air around the room and it’s quieter than a regular fan.
I’ve been using Olly Sleep gummies to help me go to sleep for over a year. What I like about these is I haven’t built up a tolerance to them like you can with plain Melatonin. I chew two gummies as I’m going to bed most nights and I’m able to read for 15 – 30 minutes before I start falling asleep.
I bought these silicone baking cups in both standard and large. They’re great for making cupcakes, muffins or individual egg bakes and you can use them in the microwave. They also add a fun pop of color to a cheese board when filled with olives, fig jam, nuts, etc. I can only assume they would make a great snack cup for kids filled with goldfish or other small treat.
Since I’m shopping on Amazon weekly, sometimes even daily, I’m going to post regular list of things I’m buying on Amazon. So please share this post with others who might enjoy regular Amazon suggestions and comment below with some of your favorite things to buy on Amazon.

Things I Love – #15
Below are some of my favorite clothing items on Amazon and a few new items that caught my eye. Click on the photos below or the blue text for a link to each item.
Dresses are one of my favorite things to wear because it’s a fast and easy way to look pulled together. This long sleeve tunic dress is lined, has pockets and it comes in a variety of colors. I have the red one.
The same dress as above except with a cute ruffle short sleeve. I have the black one.
Every closet should have a long tank dress. You can dress this up or down and add layers underneath or on top. I love throwing on an oversized cardigan or denim jacket with sneakers for running errands. Switch out your shoes, add some fun jewelry and you’re ready to go out for dinner.
If maxi dresses aren’t your thing, here’s a short tank dress that is just as flexible.
If you’d prefer to cover your arms, here’s a great t-shirt dress that comes in a variety of colors.
This is a super cute dress to throw on as a cover-up or to wear running errands with a pair of flip flops.
This BB Dakota dress would make a great date night or even wedding guest dress.
Every time I use this rattan bag I get at least one compliment from a stranger. You can fit a small wallet, a cell phone, hand sanitizer and a baggie with a face mask inside. Perfect for a day of errands.
I use this assortment of twenty different scarves to tie on my handbags. I love to find a scarf that ties my handbag and outfit together and this assortment covers every color combination.
This Champion V-Neck is a great workout shirt and it’s available in a variety of colors. I have the blue one.
These Under Armour leggings are super light for summer workouts.
I bought several of these cotton nightgowns in different colors. They are really comfortable and long enough to wear around the house.
I’ll post an Amazon favorites list with household items soon. What are some of your favorite Amazon clothing finds?
